The New York University track & field teams hosted day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at the Armory in Manhattan, on Saturday, February 24.
Katherine Cochran placed second in the 5,000-meter run, finishing in 17:07.18 to achieve a new personal best in the event.
"I knew the two UChicago girls were well within me, so I stayed with them the whole time. I felt good and passed them at the end," Cochran explained. "It was the best I've felt in a long time during a race."
Also in the 5k, Lucy Gott (17:52.19) and Daniela Sekhar placed ninth and 10th, respectively, with Sekhar setting a new personal best of 17:55.74.
Dasha Jackson qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, which takes place tomorrow, following her eighth-place finish in the preliminaries. Jackson surpassed her previous top time, posting a 9.34 finish. Also achieving a new personal best in the event was Nikhita Bolineni, who crossed the line in 10.14 to take 14th place.
Cindy Leonard set a personal best in the preliminary section of the 60-meter dash, crossing the line in 8:34 to notch a 12th-place finish. Beverly Okyere also achieved a new personal best with her 1:01.53 finish in the 400-meter preliminary round, taking 11th place.
The distance medley relay team consisting of Viv Kane running the 1,200-meter leg, Okyere the 400, Dominga Rivera in the 800, and Grace Richardson anchoring with the 1,600-meter leg, placed fourth among the seven teams. The Violets finished in 11:44.84, trailing third-place University of Chicago by six-tenths of a second.
UChicago leads the team scoring with 64 points, followed by Washington University (St. Louis) with 42. NYU ranks sixth with 13 points after day one of competition.
The championships conclude on Sunday with competition set to beginning at 10:00 AM.
