The New York University women's fencing team, ranked 22nd in the NCAA, made their way to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC, on Saturday, February 10.
The Violets competed in five matches at the Tar Heel Duals, facing 27th-ranked LIU, 8th-ranked Northwestern University, the 20th-ranked host Tar Heels, 13th-ranked Temple University, and finally 17th-ranked Boston College.
NYU's only win of the day came in the first match against LIU, an 18-9 decision over the Sharks. The Violets' saber team, consisting of Leanne Chan, Sharon Ni and Hannah Hoverman, went 9-0 in their bouts.
"We had a great round overcoming LIU. The women's saber team was flawless," said Head Coach Ben Bratton.
The second match saw NYU fall to Northwestern 18-9.
Then, against host UNC, NYU's saber team again was victorious by a score of 6-3. However, UNC captured the other two weapons and the Tar Heels defeated the Violets 16-11.
The Violets then faced Temple and were soundly defeated 23-4.
NYU improved in the final match of the day against Boston College, but was defeated 19-8.
The Violets' dual meet record is now 8-19.
NYU now returns to action at home for the first time this season. The Violets will host the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet on Wednesday, February 14, beginning at 5:15 pm at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. Columbia University, Vassar College and Sacred Heart University will be the Violets' opponents.
