Men's Fencing Completes Tar Heel Duals

Violets Finish 1-2

The New York University men's fencing team, ranked 9th in all of NCAA, traveled to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC, on Saturday, February 10, to compete in the Tar Heel Duals.

The Violets participated in three matches, first facing 32nd-ranked LIU, then the host #15 Tar Heels, and ending their day against 8th-ranked Boston College.

NYU recorded its only win of the day in the first match against LIU, defeating the Sharks 19-8. The Violets' saber and foil team both went 9-0 in their bouts.

The second match saw NYU take on UNC, who served them their first loss of the day, 15-12. The saber team was the only weapon that was triumphant against UNC, edging the Tar Heels 5-4 as Kevin Zu went 2-1.

Against Boston College, NYU's epee and saber teams won each of their competitions 6-3. However, the Eagles' foil team posted an impressive 8-1 win and led BC to a narrow 14-13 overall victory.

Jerry Pan had an excellent day for NYU, going 7-2 in his saber bouts. Oliver Hu compiled a 5-1 record in foil.

"The team showed a lot of grit today, but came up just short against UNC and BC", said Head Coach Ben Bratton

The Violets' dual meet record is now 14-9.

"There is still a lot of fencing left in the season," Bratton added. "I'm looking forward to seeing how everyone comes together."

NYU now returns to action at home for the first time this season. The Violets will host the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet on Wednesday, February 14, beginning at 5:15pm at the John A. Paulson Center in Manhattan. Columbia University, Vassar College and Sacred Heart University will be the Violets' opponents.
