-StThe NYU Esports program will join the
National Esports College Conference (NECC) beginning September 2024.
The move to the NECC will give NYU Esports competitive teams a new home and governing structure for several of its core game titles in Valorant, Overwatch, Counter-Strike, and League of Legends.
"Joining the NECC provides a good opportunity for our club program" stated Philip Cavallo, Administrative Aide for Club Sports and Esports. "The divisional structure looks great and ideally will create competitive environment for each team while providing a tangible goal in either promotion or a CECC bid."
The move to the NECC will provide each title play under multiple divisions in each region with promotion and relegation, and provides a balanced and rewarding competition for members. The regional divisions will encourage local rivalries, and makes an effort to broadcast matches in a professional manner, enhancing the experience of players.
Champions in specific titles may qualify for the Collegiate Esports Commissioners Cup in May, an annual tournament bringing together the best teams from all over the country. NECC Champions in titles that aren't part of CECC still earn prize pools from the NECC.
"We're excited about the prospect of another step forward for our Esports competitive teams" said Devin Roban, Assistant Athletic Director for Campus Recreation. "The continued growth of our program, the developing skill and interest of our teams, and the overall improvement of the student experience will increase by moving to the NECC."
The NECC began sponsoring esports in the fall of 2020. The conference currently sponsors both regular season competition and championships across a wide variety of popular titles. With more than 300 colleges and universities currently competing in the conference, the NECC strives to be a positive home for the collegiate gaming community.
