The New York University wrestling team,
ranked #15 in the nation, improved its dual-meet record to an unblemished 9-0 with a 42-11 over the University of Southern Maine on Saturday, January 13, in Kings Point, NY.
In a match hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Violets dropped the first three bouts to Southern Maine, but went on to sweep the final seven (all by fall) to remain undefeated.
Vincenzo Napolitana at 149 started the comeback with a pin at 2:28.
John Mairano (157) almost duplicated the feat, pinning his opponent in 2:32.
NYU's next two wrestlers dominated their opponents, with
Hassan Khan (167) and
Jason Geyer (174) using just 1:36 and 0:59, respectively, to record their falls.
Trent Furman (184),
Anthony Asatrian (197), and
Evan Anderson (285) then continued the onslaught with pins in times of 1:53, 1:38 and 2:00, respectively.
"After the slow start, Vincenzo picked us up with a fall and we didn't look back," said Associate Head Coach
Corey Luce.
Next up for NYU is the NYS Collegiate Championships, which will be held at Nassau Community College in Garden City, NY, next Saturday, January 20.
