New York University's
seventh-ranked men's and
eighth-ranked women's swimming & diving teams wrapped up the first day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Atlanta, GA, on Wednesday with a new team record in the women's 800 freestyle relay.
Clocking 7:23.97, the women's A relay squad stormed to first place, smashing the NYU record of 7:27.35 set in the 2017-18 season. They also set a new UAA meet record in the process, beating UAA Championships host Emory University's 7:25.15 from 2017.
Emery Muller led off with a time of 1:52.48, the third-fastest 200 freestyle of her career.
Caitlin Marshall followed Muller with a 1:52.33 split, backed up by
Nicole Ranile (1:51.92) in the third leg.
However, NYU wasn't in the lead until anchor
Kaley McIntyre split a blistering 1:46.68, moving her team into first place and the record books. NYU beat second-place University of Chicago, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III, by 0.97 seconds. Second-ranked Emory placed third in 7:32.50.
"The women won in pretty dramatic fashion," Head Coach
Trevor Miele said. "It was just an incredible relay and anchor leg by Kaley."
The men's A relay was unfortunately disqualified for a bad exchange ruling, but will work to close the overall point gap in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle during Day 2.
"It was a bitter sweet evening with the women winning and the guys getting DQed," Miele said. "It was too bad because they swam well. Overall, the individual performances were very good so I'm excited to get back in the pool tomorrow."
Earlier in the day, the men's diving team competed in the one-meter.
Hunter Whitbeck was the top scorer for the Violets, taking 10th place with a total score of 414.60.
William Hopkins finished in 13th with 372.05.
Mitchell Mortenson rounded out NYU's competitors in 14th place, totaling 366.60.
"It was a tough event," Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean said. "Hunter just missed out on finals but dove really well. Mitchell and Will did really well for their first UAA meet. Will probably had the dive of the meet with sixes on 405C. We are looking forward to the three-meter."
After the first day, NYU's women are tied with Chicago for first place with a score of 96. The men sit in eighth with 78 due to the DQ. Combined, the Violets are currently fifth with 174.
Prelims for Day 2 start at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 9, at Emory. In addition to the individual events, the swimmers will race the 200 freestyle relay. In the diving well, the women will take to the water for the three-meter.
