New York University's women's fencing team competed at the Sacred Heart Tradition Meet on Sunday, December 3, at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.
The Violets won three of their five contests at the event, defeating Vassar College (18-9), the host Pioneers (18-9) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (17-10). NYU fell to both Penn State University (21-6) and Temple University (17-10) to go 3-2 on the day.
NYU won all three weapons against Vassar as the foil squad came out on top 7-2 with
Renee Wu and
Aurora Aschettino both prevailing in all three of their bouts. In saber, the Violets posted a slim victory which was led by
Sharon Ni and
Ashley van den Bol who both went 2-1.
Lily Papadakis shined in epee, winning all three of her bouts 5-1 as NYU had a 6-3 advantage in the weapon.
The foil team proved decisive against Sacred Heart, sweeping the Pioneers 9-0 while epee won 7-2 and saber fell by the same score. Aschettino,
Polly Adler and
Maria Stamos won three each in foil with six of the nine bouts ending 5-1.
Miriam Shoman and van den Bol picked up NYU's two saber victories while Papadakis went 3-0 in epee to lead the way.
NYU's saber squad bounced back against NJIT, defeating the Highlanders 8-1. Foil continued to perform well, winning 7-2 while epee won two of the nine bouts. Shoman and Ni were undefeated in saber and van den Bol won twice. Papadakis and
Sophia Dondisch notched the Violets' two epee triumphs while Stamos and Wu went 3-0 in foil.
Against Penn State, Stamos won two of her three foil bouts, Ni produced NYU's two saber victories and Papadakis had the lone win in epee. The Violets battled against Temple, dropping both foil and epee 5-4 while the Owls' saber team came out on top 7-2. Papadakis and Dondisch won two each in epee, as did Stamos and Wu in foil, and Ni and Shoman had the two saber wins.
Members of the women's fencing team will next compete at USA Fencing's North American Cup on Sunday, December 10.
