Grayson Kim and
Hunter Whitbeck produced top finishes for their respective teams as the Violets completed competition at the two-day NYU Diving Invitational on Friday, January 13 at the Palladium Natatorium in Manhattan.
Competing in the women's one-meter dive, Kim produced a third-place finish with a total score of 422.05. She edged out teammates
Jacqueline Swick (4th place, 415.00) and
Katherine Nardone (5th, 407.95).
Three divers from fellow University Athletic Association (UAA) program Carnegie Mellon University and one diver from Division I St. Francis College-Brooklyn also took part in the event.
"
Meera Kasturi yesterday and seniors
Grayson Kim and
Katherine Nardone today were terrific," said Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "Jackie Swick had the best meet since she's been at NYU and achieved her first Regional qualifying score."
For the men,
Hunter Whitbeck led the way in the three-meter with a fourth-place finish (480.20).
William Hopkins (438.49) took sixth place as nine divers competed.
"
Hunter Whitbeck just keeps doing what he does best and that is to compete," Kolean said. "This weekend is our Senior Appreciation with the culmination of the swimming meet tomorrow. I couldn't be prouder of all the seniors and what they have had to go through over the last few years and be able to come out the other side and be the leaders that they have become."
There was no team scoring at the Invitational.
"This was perhaps the strongest field we have gone against over the year," Kolean added. "Carnegie Mellon is no joke and we saw a bunch of All-Americans dive over the last few days both on the NYU side and the CMU side. Coming out of our winter training I really thought we dove outstanding both days."
The NYU swimmers face Long Island University on Saturday at 1:00pm, and both the senior swimmers and divers will be honored prior to the competition.
