In its first competition in 726 days, the New York University baseball team hosted John Jay College for a doubleheader at Maimonides Park in Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon.
The Violets swept the day, totaling a whopping 28 runs across the two contests. They won game one, 20-7, and followed with an 8-0 shutout.
Game 1
Junior
Tyler Judge got the nod as NYU's first starting pitcher in nearly two years, tossing four shutout innings to open this one. The Violets' offense struggled across the first four frames as well, as the game remained tied 0-0 after four full.
NYU broke the gridlock in the bottom of the fifth as
Ryan Carr cracked a leadoff double to left field. He tagged up and advanced to third when the next batter flied out, and
Nick Argenziano promptly drove him in with a double of his own to put the Violets up 1-0.
Connor Roggero singled to center to score Argenziano, giving NYU a 2-0 edge after five innings.
The Bloodhounds cut their deficit in half, plating a run in the top of the sixth. However, NYU erupted for eight runs in the bottom half, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of
Zane Baker, ballooning the advantage to 10-1 after six.
NYU's bats could not be stopped in the bottom of the eighth, plating 10 more runs behind eight hits in the frame. John Jay walked five Violets in the inning as well while six straight NYU batters recorded RBIs to solidify the rout.
John Jay rallied in the top of the eighth, pushing six runs across, but could not climb back within single digits as NYU secured their first win since March 9, 2020 (also against John Jay).
Nate Pallotta and
Richard Beggy both went 2-for-2 with two runs scored apiece.
PJ Mahoney drove in three runs, going 1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored.
Jacob Singer also notched a pair of hits and 14 Violets recorded at least one RBI in the victory. Judge threw a gem, pitching six full innings and allowing just four hits, one run and one walk while striking out 10.
John Gassler,
Greg Rosen,
Tyler Offman and
Jason Pearson all had scoreless outings in relief.
Game 2
Jack Hassett shined on the bump for NYU in the second game of the day, striking out 11 across five shutout innings. He allowed just two hits and one walk to secure his first collegiate pitching win.
The Violets scored three runs in the bottom of the second, two each in the fourth and fifth, and one more in the sixth as they finished the seven-inning affair with a shutout triumph.
Carr was the only Violet with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Singer and Baker also drove in runs, but it was six Bloodhound errors that fueled NYU's scoring opportunities.
Andrew Reid,
Joseph Argenziano and
Ashwin Chona aided in the shutout as each made a scoreless appearance out of the bullpen.
