The New York University's men's and women's diving teams wrapped up their first day of competition at the Carnegie Mellon Diving Invitational in Pittsburgh, PA, on Friday.
"We're very happy with the way we competed today," Head Coach
Todd Kolean said. "This is a huge meet with a lot of divers, many of them All-Americans from last year."
Despite the tough field,
Issara Schmidt took first place in the three-meter with a score of 483.20, securing her second win of the season in this event after a victory in the
NYU Fall Invitational season opener.
Katherine Nardone followed in third place with 420.65 and
Grayson Kim finished fifth, posting a score of 416.15. Both divers' scores made the NCAA Division III Regional Championships qualification cut. They join Schmidt, who qualified at the Fall Invite and again in Pittsburgh.
Jacqueline Swick (11th, 388.20) rounded out the competitors from the women's team.
In the men's one-meter,
Hunter Whitbeck was the Violets' top scorer, placing seventh with a score of 386.35.
Makai Harder and
Sahil Das finished 10th, 342.70, and 11th, 336.55, respectively.
Mitchell Mortenson (13th, 328.85) and
William Hopkins (14th, 318.65) also represented the Violets.
Overall, 24 divers competed in the three-meter and 20 in the one-meter to represent six universities.
"On the men's side, the competition was tougher with four divers from the top eight at last year's Nationals competing," Kolean said. "Whitbeck had a fantastic meet and was solid all day long. All the men were solid and these meets show what needs work."
The Violets will dive into the second session of the meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, to conclude their weekend.
