Returning to intercollegiate competition for the first time since December 5, New York University's Men's and Women's Fencing Teams took the strip at the highly-competitive Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday and Sunday, January 22-23.
The Violets went up against some of college fencing's finest, taking on the University of North Carolina, Duke University, Lafayette College, Johns Hopkins University, Ohio State University, the University of Notre Dame, Yale University, and the host Quakers.
NYU's men picked up wins over Lafayette (19-8), Johns Hopkins (19-8), Ohio State (14-13) and Yale (15-12) while the women's lone victory came against Lafayette (21-6).
The men's fencing team's record moves to 8-6 after the weekend and the women are now 4-10 on the season.
In the men's win over Lafayette, NYU went 9-0 in saber with
Ryan Xu (Aurora, ON, Canada/St. Andrew's College) winning two bouts. Women's foil also posted a 9-0 mark against the Leopards as
Polly Adler (Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale) won twice in her collegiate debut.
Brian Kim (Upper Saddle River, NJ/Dwight-Englewood) and
Jamie Ren (Hong Kong, Hong Kong/The Lawrenceville School (Lawrenceville, NJ)) each went 3-0 in saber against Johns Hopkins as the Violets won the weapon 8-1 to pace the team.
Saber (7-2) led the way versus Ohio State as well with Kim, Ren and
Darren Yen (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) picking up two wins each.
Against Yale, NYU's epee fencers won 6-3 as
Ian Adler (Malvern, PA/Great Valley),
Ian Sanders (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and
Camron Daniel (Brooklyn, NY/Hunter College HS) all won two bouts.
