The New York University Women's Soccer Team has found its groove right before conference play starts.
The Violets (6-2) extended their win streak to five games in explosive fashion against Muhlenberg College on Wednesday, September 29, at Gaelic Park, winning 4-0.
Gabriella Funk (Fremont, CA/Irvington) led the Violets with two goals for her second brace in three games. Her first tally came just five minutes into the first half off Summer Steadman's (Palo Alto, CA/Henry M. Gunn) cross, while the second (59') gave the Violets a 3-0 lead.
"Gabriella comes every single game to raise the level of her own performance as well as the team's," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "She had opportunities in the earlier matches, but things are just clicking."
Funk has scored four goals in three games and leads NYU in goals and points (nine).
Riley Felsher (Pennington, NJ/Princeton Day School) and the Violets' defense have not allowed a goal during the win streak and Canning is proud of the growth she has seen out of the defense.
"We have a lot of new players in the back four," Canning said. "It has taken us some time to get on the same page and get used to communicating with one another. We're getting there."
Ellie Marks (Seattle, WA/University Prep) scored her first goal of the year early in the second half after a tremendous run on the left side of the box.
The final nail in the Mules' (1-6-1) coffin came when
Sam March (Glastonbury, CT/Kingswood Oxford School) sent a cross into the box,
Isa Badillo (San Jose, CA/Valley Christian) flicked it with her back heel and left
Catie Collins (Scranton, PA/Scranton Prep) with a wide-open look at the net.
NYU out-shot Muhlenberg 33-2 on the night without allowing a shot on goal.
The Violets return to action Saturday, October 2, at 11:00 am to open up University Athletic Association (UAA) play against Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH.
