NYU Athletics Recognizes National Athletic Training Month

In honor of National Athletic Training Month, New York University Athletics would like to recognize special VIP members of its Athletics family- Athletic Trainers.

During March, athletic trainers across America are being recognized for their commitment to helping people prevent injuries, stay healthy and active, and most recently, leading the way with establishing COVD-19 protocols. Athletic trainers are healthcare providers. Highly educated and dedicated to the job at hand, athletic trainers can be found in high schools and colleges, corporations, professional sports, the military, performing arts and clinics, hospitals, and physician offices.

"For almost a year now our playing fields, courts and pool have lacked the energy of student-athletes, coaches, staff, opponents and fans. Yet, the absence of competition has not diminished the need or the importance of athletic trainers in the lives of our student athletes," said Stuart Robinson, NYU's Vice President for Student Affairs and Director of Athletics. "Whether volunteering as a part of the University's COVID-19 response efforts or meeting virtually with students and fellow staff members for wellness checks, our team continues to impress me with its energy and drive to make a difference in the lives of people. As challenging as the last year has been, these talented professionals have never wavered in their commitment to make a difference in the lives of our student-athletes and peers. They are indeed a special group."

Athletic Trainers impact healthcare through action.

The NYU athletic training staff continues to provide resources to assist the student-athletes, whose health and wellbeing is the forefront of their office. Wellbeing includes the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of a person.

"The entire athletic training staff at NYU is always there for me, both mentally and physically. Their dedication to the student-athletes goes above and beyond, and they are always willing to work with and help me for any obstacle I may have." - Junior Nick Macarchuk (Alamo, CA/St. Thomas Moore Prep), Men's Basketball.

"From my experience as an athlete, NYU has some of the best trainers in the country. I've never seen a staff that is so caring and is there for us every step of the way. Although many of us did not have a season, the trainers continued to check in on us, give us advice, and help us out in any way that they could. For that reason, I will always appreciate everything the NYU athletic trainers do."- Senior Miguel Ruiz (Madera, CA/Madera), Wrestling.

"Our athletic training staff constantly goes above and beyond with their high level of care and support for our student-athletes' needs. Their constant engagement and support both proactively and in the moment allows our team to compete at the top level in our best physical state."- Head Women's Volleyball Coach Andrew Brown.

"The entire medical staff has been an enormous help and resource for both my staff and our players. They are intimately involved with each player and care deeply about their health and well being. They work tirelessly to help us maximize the athletes' performances."- Head Men's Soccer Coach Kim Wyant

"Our NYU Athletic Training Staff takes a hands-on approach in working with our student-athletes. They are a trusted partner in the holistic development of our program."- Head Men's Basketball Coach Dagan Nelson.

A Story from the Road
"Last March, I flew out of NYC with four of my wrestlers and our trainer, Angela Savern, for the NCAA Division III Championships. The night prior to competition, our Championships were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Angela took it upon herself to follow up with our wrestlers continuously because of her concern for their mental state. We had three wrestlers ranked highly, two of them top-six in the rankings. All three were seniors and had spent hundreds of hours preparing for this event. They were clearly heartbroken, and because of Angela and our sports medicine department they all had a great support system in place. We flew back to NYU the next morning and within hours of arriving we were all sent home due to covid. However, our trainer has continued to communicate with our athletes by phone or email continuously since then. It seems this has been a pattern for all NYU athletic teams at NYU. When speaking with other coaches, they have told me their trainers have stayed in close contact with all our athletes and coaches. This is a clear example of 'lets see how much we can help' as opposed to 'I did my job'. That's how our trainers and our sports medicine department operate. The professionalism and effort our trainers put into their jobs is superior and second to none." - Head Wrestling Coach Bruce Haberli
