The New York University Women's Soccer team's comeback effort fell just short on Saturday, October 9.
NYU (7-4, 0-2) fell to
No. 17 Carnegie Mellon University 2-1 at Gaelic Park in a University Athletic Association (UAA) matchup.
The Tartans (9-2, 2-0) held a 1-0 lead at the half, as Maria Askounis tapped in her own rebound just before the break, then added to their lead with a one-timer off a short pass in the box after a corner kick in the 57th minute.
Gabriella Funk (Fremont, CA/Irvington) notched her team-leading sixth goal of the year just five minutes later to bring NYU back within a score, but the Violets were unable to find the net for the rest of the match.
Funk has now scored in three of her last four games.
Both NYU and Carnegie Mellon tallied 10 shots for the game, but the Tartans led in shots on goal 7-2.
Goalkeeper
Riley Felsher (Pennington, NJ/Princeton Day School) recorded five saves in the contest. She has blocked 11 shots in the past two matches.
The Violets will look to earn their first UAA win of the season when they travel to Missouri to face Washington University in St. Louis (8-0-1, 1-0) on Friday, October 15 at 6:30 EST. Wash U. is currently ranked third in the nation according to the latest
United Soccer Coaches poll.
