The New York University baseball team won both games of a doubleheader against Stockton University on Sunday, March 8, in Galloway, NJ. The Violets scored a dozen runs in each game, sweeping the Ospreys by scores of 12-1 and 12-10.
In the first game, NYU (3-1) scored four runs in the first inning thanks to a
Coltrane Tait (Newport Beach, CA/Sage Hill) three-run double. NYU added four more in the second with four different Violets knocking in a run. NYU tallied two more runs in the sixth inning and one run in both the seventh and ninth innings to end their scoring.
The Violets scored first in game two as well, plating two runs in the bottom of the third inning and adding three more in the bottom of the fourth highlighted by Tait two-RBI single to take a decisive 5-0 lead through four innings. However, Stockton (6-3) answered back by scoring three runs in the home-half of the fifth inning and two more in the seventh frame. NYU followed up with four runs in the eighth inning and three in the ninth inning. The Ospreys were able to score five runs in the bottom of the ninth, but their rally fell short.
Gabriel Golob and John Gassler (Pittsford, NY/Sutherland) earned the mound decisions for the Violets. Golob started game one and allowed five hits while striking out 12 in 7.2 innings of work. Gassler, who tossed two innings of relief in game two, didn't allow any hits and fanned two.
Offensively, Cassandra
, Berman and
Tait led NYU in game one, tallying two hits each. Tait also tabbed five RBI's for the Violets.
"Gabe gave us a huge lift in the first game," said Head Coach
Doug Kimbler. "When a pitcher throws like that you can get really relaxed at the plate."
Berman and Tait finished game two going 3-for-4 and 2-for-5, respectively. Six other Violets -
Zane Baker (Bellevue, WA/Lakeside School),
Ford Ladd (Longmont, CO/Niwot),
Nick Loffredo (Seneca, SC/Saint Joseph (NJ)), Francis Prior (North Caldwell, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), Nick Argenziano (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) and Grant Otto (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Delbarton) - each had a hit in
the
second game. Otto also had a team-high three RBI's.
"We got away from our philosophy a bit in the second game," added Kimbler. "But, we managed to stay focused at the end to take the win."
NYU takes the field again tomorrow night when it plays host to John Jay College. First pitch at MCU Park is set for 6:00pm.
