The Hall of Fame Class of 2021

Dr. Israel Colon– Men's Fencing

A graduate of NYU's School of Commerce, Class of 1962, Colon joined the freshman fencing team in 1958. During his sophomore year, NYU went 9-0 and won the 1960 NCAA National Championship while sweeping all the weapons. Colon stepped into a prominent role the following season as he was selected to represent NYU at the 1961 NCAA National Championships. He did not disappoint, winning the individual sabre title and earning First Team All-America honors. His effort helped NYU to secure not only back-to-back National Championships, but to become the first team to sweep all of the weapons for two consecutive seasons.

From freshman starter to senior captain, Griffin helped his team achieve its first-ever winning season in 1998-99, its first-ever number-one ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III Poll, and first-ever EIVA Championship title. The two-time captain and one-time MVP, holds the record for most career assists (5,216) and graduated with 27 top-five program records – all of which still stand today.

The 1960 and 1961 Men's Fencing NCAA Championship Team

NYU Athletics will also honor the 60-year anniversary of the back-to-back Men's Fencing NCAA Championship titles. Dominating the competition in both 1960 and 1961, NYU swept all three weapons and took home a pair of National Championships. The 1960 team defeated the defending National Champion, Navy, 65-57, with Gene Glazer winning foil, Gil Eisner taking épée and Mike D'Asaro dominating sabre. In 1961, three different fencers led NYU to victory over Princeton with Herbert Cohen winning foil, Jerry Halpern taking épée and Israel Colon capturing sabre. The 1961 team was the first to sweep all three weapons in consecutive years. These two teams produced a total of six NCAA All-Americans and three Olympians (Cohen, Glazer, D'Asaro).

About the NYU Hall of Fame

The current Hall of Fame was established as a result of the merger of NYU's Varsity Club Hall of Fame, which was founded in 1970 to honor members of the men's teams, and the Women's Hall of Fame, which was founded in 1976 by a group of former female student-athletes. The Hall of Fame currently includes 224 distinguished members, spanning more than 100 years of rich athletic history.
