The New York University men's swimming & diving team, ranked #6 in the nation by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), competed against host #11 Williams College and #4 Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Williams Tri-Meet on Friday, January 24, in Williamstown, MA.
The Violets came up short against both schools, being edged 152-142 by MIT and 164-136 by Williams.
NYU's swimmers got off to a hot start after taking first place in the 400-yard medley relay.
William Looney (Denison, TX/Denison),
Giorgio DelGrosso (Keego Harbor, MI/Cranbrook Kingswood),
Elan Oumarov (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Technical), and
John Piccinic (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) combined to swim a 3:23.19 in the event. Later on, DelGrosso won his second race of the day after taking the 100-yard backstroke in 56.22. He proceeded to follow this up with another victory, this time in the 200-yard back (2:04.09).
Also earning a victory for NYU was
Graham Chatoor (Glencoe, Trinidad/International School of Port Spain), who took an early lead in the 1,650-yard freestyle and never looked back, finishing with a time of 15:52.05.
"Though we lost both meets, they were super close," noted Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "The guys got up and raced hard and that's exactly what I wanted."
In the diving events,
Hunter Whitbeck (Acton, MA /Acton-Boxborough Regional ) led the Violets in the three-meter dive, finishing in second with a score of 324.75 followed by
Cole Vertin (San Jose, CA/St. Francis) in third (308.18) and
Jack Callaghan (Palo Alto, CA /Palo Alto ) in fourth (282.68). In the one-meter dive, Vertin finished second (286.50) with Callaghan right behind in third (283.12).
"It was a very strong field," added Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "Cole and Hunter competed very well with some of their highest scores yet, while Jack had his best meet by far."
"While it is disappointing to lose the meet, I was very happy with how we performed for this time of the year," concluded Miele.
The Violets will be back in action on Friday, February 7, when they host day one of the NYU Invitational at the Palladium Athletic Facility Natatorium in Manhattan.
