Philadelphia Invitational Results
The New York University men's fencing team won three of its five matches on the first day of competition at the Philadelphia Invitational, which is being hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday and Sunday, January 19-20, in Philadelphia, PA.
The Violets defeated Brown University (21-6), Haverford College (22-5) and Yale University (14-13), while suffering close losses to the University of North Carolina (14-13) and host UPenn (16-11).
There were many outstanding performances in all three weapons for the Violets, now 6-6 in dual meets this season.
Zohaib Mannan led the foil team with 11 victories while only suffering three losses.
Gabriel Mejia-Ruiz supported his teammates with seven victories (7-7) in the weapon.
A pair of Violets led the way in epee, as both
Liam Carpenter (9-4) and
Sam Bekker (9-5) produced nine victories.
NYU's big gun on the sabre team was
Mickey Bak. After studying abroad during the fall season, Bak has come back to lead the way for his team, posting a 10-4 record on Saturday.
The Violets get right back into action on Sunday for the second day of the invitational. They will face five teams beginning with Ohio State University at 8:30am.
