The New York University men's fencing team went 3-4 in dual meets at the Sacred Heart Tradition Multi-Meet on Sunday, December 3, in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The Violets started out the competition with close losses to Penn State University (16-11) and Princeton University (16-11) before beating Harvard University 14-13 in Round 3. NYU was then defeated by the University of Pennsylvania (21-6) and New Jersey Institute of Technology (18-9), but bested Sacred Heart University (19-8) and host Vassar College (19-8) in the final two rounds of the day.

Leading the way for the Violets was junior Mickey Bak. The Linden, NJ, native finished with a 13-3 record in sabre.

"We did a great job against very good competition," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Freshmen Zachary Schindler and Bobby Cottingham also performed well in sabre. Schindler finished 10-8 on the day, including a perfect 3-0 record against Sacred Heart, while Cottingham went 9-11 and notched two wins against both Penn State and the University of Pennsylvania.

"Our freshmen have been impressive," added Mormando. "Going 10-8 and 9-11 are both excellent against this level of competition."

- Senior Philip Shin (11-7) and junior Kyle Welch (10-9) each finished with double-digit victories in foil.

- Freshman Ian Sanders went 9-8 in epee to round out a strong day for the freshman class.

The Violets are back in action for the National Senior Circuit on Friday-Monday, December 8-11.
