Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Rowan

Violets Open Up 2017-18 Campaign with Victory in South Jersey

COMPLETE RESULTS

The New York University women's swimming & diving team opened up the 2017-18 season with a 188-107 victory over host Rowan University on Saturday, October 14, in Glassboro, NJ.

NYU won 11 of 16 events to swim to its first victory of the 2017-18 campaign. It was the Violets' 27th-straight dual meet victory dating back to 2013-14.

"It was a good start to the year," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "We had some competitive races and I was happy to see a strong showing from our freshmen and our returners."

The NYU 200-yard medley relay team of May Li, Honore Collins, Erica Yuen, and Sarah Stone got things started with a victory in 1:49.66, finishing less than .30 ahead of a team from Rowan.

Collins, who became the Violets' first individual national champion in 2016-17 as a freshman, also earned a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.95).

On the diving boards, Ashlyn King (3-meter; 261.20) and Carmen White (1-meter; 260.25) each picked up wins. White also finished second on the 3-meter and King recorded a third-place finish on the 1-meter.

"I was pleasantly surprised how we dove today," said Head Diving Coach Todd Kolean. "We haven't practiced much yet, but Ashlyn and Carmen were impressive and Carmen and Kelly (Ryser) each had a qualifying zone score."

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

Ashley Heinemen opened up her career as a Violet with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke, completing the race in 2:27.85.

- Grace Wakabayashi won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:51.71) and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.77).

- Yuen, a freshman who was making her NYU debut, also earned a win in the 100-yard butterfly (57.94).

"We know we have a lot of hard work ahead of us," added Miele. "But, we are definitely happy with the way we started the season."

The Violets return to the pool on Friday and Saturday, November 3 and 4, when they host the NYU Fall Invitational. Swimming begins at 5:00pm Friday evening.
