The New York University men's fencing team won four of its five matches at the Philadelphia Invitational, which was hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, January 21.
The Violets, who raised their record to 8-4 this season, defeated the University of North Carolina (16-11), Drew University (19-8), Haverford College (21-6), and New Jersey Institute of Technology (17-10).
The Violets only loss of the day was against host UPenn, currently ranked #6 in the nation by
CollegeFencing360.com, by a score of 14-13.
There were several outstanding performances by the NYU fencers.
In sabre,
Grant Williams went a near-perfect 12-1, while
Quinten Burgunder was 10-3.
The epee team produced two fencers with nine wins:
Hans Engel (9-1) and
Alexandre Crepeaux (9-4).
The foil team leaders in wins all had seven:
Daniel Sconzo (7-3),
Philip Shin (7-4) and
Sean Grant (7-5).
The Violets get right back on the strip tomorrow when they compete at Columbia University. NYU will face Wayne State University, the University of Notre Dame and St. John's University beginning at 9:00 am.
