The New York University baseball team (12-18) dropped a pair of contests to St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn (17-15) on Thursday, April 21, at MCU Park in Brooklyn, NY.
The Violets managed only one run in each game, falling 3-1 and 5-1.
Jacob Bader started game one on the mound for the Violets, his first start of the season. He went six-plus innings, allowing one earned run on four hits before being relieved by
Matthew Millus.
"Bader was very economical with his pitch count today," said assistant Coach
Jake Chaplin. "He came in and set the tone for us."
NYU came out swinging to grab the early lead in the bottom of the first inning, as
Adrian Spitz singled in
Jonathan Iaione.
The Violets managed to hold onto the tight lead going into the top of the seventh inning. However, a pair of St. Joseph's doubles and Violet errors gave the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Jeremy Wayne and
Jake Smith tried to spark a late-inning rally in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff single and walk, but the Violets were unable to overcome the deficit.
"We left a lot of runs on the table in that game and it came back to bite us," said Chaplin. "We need more quality at-bats and need to have them consistantly."
Michael Vokulich took the mound for the Violets in game two. He allowed three earned runs on five hits in four innings.
St. Joseph's quickly grabbed the early lead on an NYU error and continued to put up runs in each of the next three innings as the Violets struggled defensively.
NYU's only run was scored on an RBI double to the left field wall from
Jack Elias in the bottom of the fifth inning.
"Today was a disappointing day," continued Chaplin. "We need to play clean baseball. When you have more errors than hits, that is not a recipe for success."
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
-
Jack Walter had two hits for the Violets.
-
Colman Hendershot went 2-3.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
-
Eli Edwards pitched two innings in relief, giving up no earned runs.
-
Jason Beck pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
- Walter scored the only run for the Violets.
"We've said from day one, pitching and defense will win us games," said Chaplin. "That needs to be the tone we set tomorrow. I look forward to seeing how we can respond to this, because good teams will bounce back."
The Violets return to action tomorrow, April 22, for a doubleheader at home against SUNY New Paltz. Game one is set to begin at 3:30 pm.
