Men's Fencing Wins Two at Columbia

Violets Defeat Vassar and Sacred Heart

Results vs.:   Columbia     Vassar    Sacred Heart

The New York University men's fencing team defeated two of its three opponents at Columbia University's Historical Meet on Wednesday, February 10, in Manhattan.

After dropping a close match to the host Lions, 15-12, the Violets went on to defeat Vassar College 20-7 and Sacred Heart University 18-9.

NYU, now 12-5 this season, was led by freshman Grant Williams, who went 8-0 in sabre. Sophomore Philip Shin recorded the most foil victories with six, while the epee team was led by junior captain John Cramerus with a 5-1 record.

"Williams was a real tiger on the strip tonight," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "He didn't let anyone breathe out there."

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Junior captain Quinten Burgunder and freshman Mickey Bak each picked up five sabre victories.

- Sophomore Daniel Sconzo went 5-2 in foil.

- Sophomore Hans Engel contributed four epee wins.

"Overall, a really strong performance tonight," Mormando added. "We lost by only three points to last year's NCAA National Champion (Columbia). We have a young team that will only get better."

Several members of the team will be back in action this weekend at the U.S. Junior Olympic National Championships in Cleveland, OH.
