Men's Fencing Competes at Tradition Tournament

Violets Finish With a 4-2 Record

The New York University men's fencing team went 4-2 in dual meets at the Tradition Tournament on Sunday, December 4, hosted by Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.

The Violets started out the competition with close losses to Penn State University (15-12) and Princeton University (16-11). However, it was all wins after that, as the Violets defeated New Jersey Institute of Technology (16-11), Vassar College (18-9), Harvard University (14-13), and host Sacred Heart (15-12).

The victory over Harvard, who finished seventh in the nation at the 2016 NCAA Championship, proved to be the Violets' biggest win of the afternoon.

"We pulled off a great upset against a Harvard team that's one of the best teams in all of Division I," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando

HIGHLIGHTS:

- The Violets were led by senior captain Quinten Burgunder. The Chatham, NJ, native finished with a 12-3 record in sabre.

- Juniior Daniel Sconzo finished with a 10-7 record in foil.

- Freshman Alexandre Crepeaux, who normally fences foil, had a strong performance in epee. Crepeaux went 8-8 on Sunday, including a 3-0 record against Harvard.

"I was very happy with our performance," added Mormando. "If a few bouts went the other way, we'd be 6-0 on the day."

Several Violets will be back in action for the National Circuit, which will take place from Friday-Monday, January 6-9, in Columbus, OH.
