Women's Soccer Tops Stockton in ECAC First Round

Pena Scores Winner 18 Seconds Into Overtime

The New York University women's soccer team defeated Stockton University by a score of 3-2 on Saturday, November 12, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY. The win advanced the #1-seeded Violets (11-3-5) to the quarterfinals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championship.

Alex Benedict opened the scoring just after six minutes into the contest when she cut in from the right wing and fired a left-footed shot past Stockton's goalkeeper from the top of the box.

NYU held the lead over the #4-seeded Ospreys (12-8-2) until the 60th minute, when Adrianna Boucher received a long ball behind the defense and slotted home the equalizer.

After a scramble in the box following a shot off the crossbar by Olivia Braender-Carr, Meredith Hackerson shot into an open goal at 81:07 to give the Violets a 2-1 lead. The advantage would be short-lived, as a defensive misplay resulted in an easy tap-in for Stockton exactly three minutes later.

Just 18 seconds into overtime, Maddie Pena dribbled past several defenders and beat the keeper from outside the box to give NYU the 3-2 victory.

"We're really happy with the team's mental performance today, bouncing back from giving up the tying goal to finish the game off early in overtime," said Head Coach Michele Canning. "Tonight we just want to make sure we take care of ourselves so we're ready for tomorrow."

BTW...

- NYU outshot Stockton 15-9. Both teams recorded eight shots on goal.

- Benedict led all players with three total shots, while Boucher and Pena led all players with two shots on goal.

- Cassie Steinberg recorded six saves on the day while posting her 11th win of the season.

The Violets return to action tomorrow against #2 William Paterson University. The contest is set to begin at 11:00 am at Gaelic Park.
