Violets Go Undefeated in Waltham, MA

Results

The New York University men's fencing team competed at the Eric Sollee Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University, on Saturday, January 30, in Waltham, MA.

The Violets (10-4) posted a perfect 6-0 record on the day. NYU began with a 17-10 win over Boston College, followed by a 21-6 victory over Brown University. The squad closed out the first half of the day with a 23-4 defeat of Haverford College. Following the break, the Violets defeated the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (21-6), Brandeis University (20-7) and Hunter College (25-2).

"This is the best weekend we've had in many years," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "We beat all six teams and beat them strong. It was also great to have the full compliment of our roster here with us."

Individually, Philip Shin led the Violets with 16 wins (16-2 overall) at foil. Daniel Sconzo went 15-1 in foil, as well, and was second on NYU in wins on the day. Grant Williams (14-2 at sabre) and Hans Engel (14-3 at epee) were third with 14 wins apiece in their respective weapons.

"Foil performed spectacularly and litterally overwhelmed their opponents," continued Mormando. "Sabre and epee were not too shabby either, but we have not had this type of foil result since the 1970's."

Overall, seven Violets totaled double-digit wins.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- Quinten Burgunder (10-4) and Mickey Bak (11-5) both performed well in sabre. Siegfried Gokea went 6-0 at sabre, as well.

- Yash Srivastav (9-1) and Kyle Welch (7-0) both stoodout in foil for the Violets.

- John Cramerus was second to Engel with a 12-4 record in epee.

The Violets will return to action on Wednesday evening, February 10, when they travel uptown to neighboring Columbia University for the Historical Meet. NYU will face the Lions, Vassar College and Sacred Heart University.
