Violets Drop 16-11 Decision to Judges

RESULTS

The New York University men's fencing team dropped a 16-11 decision to Brandeis University on Saturday, January 31, in Waltham, MA.

The Violets, 4-8 this season, won two of the three weapons. They defeated their University Athletic Association (UAA) opponent in both epee (6-3) and foil (5-4), but were shutout in sabre (9-0).

Each of NYU's three epee competitors (Malcolm Lewis, captain Evan Accardi and Igor Kuzovkin) went 2-1.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

- Weija Chen and Yash Srivastav each went 2-1 in foil.

- David Popkin also recorded a foil victory.

- Five different Violets (Jonathan Chua, Alex Grossman, Fernando Maymi, Colin Sherman, captain Stephan Teng) competed in sabre.

"Today's competition was used primarily as an opportunity to give some of our non-starters a chance to gain some experience and add bouts that they may need to qualify for NCAA Regionals at the end of the season," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "Both teams used the same philosophy today, and both will be competing again tomorrow so in this way our starters stay fresh."

The Violets get right back on the strip tomorrow when they compete at the Eric Sollee Invitational at MIT beginning at 9:00 am in Cambridge, MA.
