Follow @NYUAthletics The New York University men's volleyball team, ranked #11 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Preseason Coaches Poll, opens its 2015 season on Saturday, January 24, against host Stevenson College and Rutgers-Newark University in Owings Mills, MD.
The Violets concluded their 2014 season with an 18-11 overall record and a 5-6 mark in its third season as a member of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC). NYU was the #8 seed in the UVC Championship Tournament and upset both
top-seeded Nazareth College and
#4 Elmira College before falling to
#2 SUNY New Paltz in the championship final.
NYU is ranked #4 in the UVC Preseason Coaches Poll.
"I expect our team to have another successful season," said Head Coach
Jose Pina. "I feel that we will compete for both the UVC regular-season crown and the conference tournament championship in the strongest conference in Division III men's volleyball. The goal, as always, is to make the NCAA Tournament."
Key returners for the Violets include juniors
Phil Bueno and
Colin LaPorte, and sophomore
Chase Klein. Bueno led last year's team in total blocks (77) and finished second in service aces (30), while LaPorte placed second in kills (273), kills per set (3.00) and points (326.5). Klein will look to build on a successful rookie season in which he led the Violets in kills (340), kills per set (3.66), points (395.5), and points per set (4.25).
The season-opening match against Stevenson will begin at 11:00 am and the Rutgers-Newark match is scheduled to follow at 1:00 pm.
