Men's Volleyball Beats Ramapo College in Final Home Match

Violets Post 3-1 Victory

The New York University men's volleyball team (16-10) beat Ramapo College (24-10) at the Coles Sports Center in New York, NY, on Wednesday, April 9.

The Violets defeated the Roadrunners by close scores of 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 27-25.

NYU got off to a tough start in the first set, tying 24-24 with Ramapo before suffering a kill and error to lose the set.
 
The Violets dominated the second set, topping Ramapo 25-18.

The third set saw 11 ties and three lead changes before NYU sealed the deal with kills by sophomore Colin LaPorte and senior Matthew Coghlan.

The fourth set followed suit, as the game was knotted on multiple occassions. With the set tied at 25-25, freshman Chase Klein delivered a kill to put the Violets in the lead. After a nail-biting rally, sophomore Phil Bueno attacked the ball for the match-winning kill.

"This match was great preparation for our upcoming playoff match against Nazareth College," said Head Coach Jose Pina. "Both teams are very long, but we battled their size tonight and came out on top." 

Highlights:

- Klein and LaPorte led the team with 17 kills apiece.
 
- Senior captain Connor Mortland led the team with a double-double of 38 assists and 12 digs.

- Mortland hit .750 with six kills.

"The seniors played pretty well," Pina added. "Connor was critical in our win. He stablized passing and his defense was good." 

The Violets are heading to the UVC Championships this weekend, April 12-13. Their first match is against #1-seed and host Nazareth College, set to start at 10:30 am on Saturday in Rochester, NY.
