Men's Volleyball Tops D'Youville; Falls to Elmira

Violets Remain .500 in Conference Play

The #14 New York University men's volleyball team split its two matches at the United Volleyball Conference Crossover in Elmira, NY, on Sunday, March 9. The Violets (12-6, 5-5) defeated D'Youville College (2-14, 0-9) in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-21, 25-17 before losing to #11 Elmira College (15-6, 6-3) by scores of 29-27, 26-28, 19-25, 25-21, 15-13.
 
Eleven Violets saw action in the first match as they managed to keep D'Youville to a .000 hitting percentage.
 
Colin LaPorte's 17 kills in the match equaled the total kill output of the entire D'Youville roster, while his four service aces were more than the combined three recorded by the Spartans. In total, NYU out-killed D'Youville 38-17.

The second match was competitive from the start. The first set saw tie scores of 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 before Elmira was able to string together back-to-back kills to take the set 29-27.
 
NYU was the team to come up clutch in the second as it overcame set points at 24-23 and 26-25 before capturing the set by a score of 28-26.
 
The Violets were able to carry that momentum into the third set. Chase Klein had six of his match-high 24 kills, as the team cruised to a 25-19 victory.
 
After a kill and two-straight service aces to start the fourth, the Soaring Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage and didn't look back. Elmira never relinquished the lead en route to a 25-21 fourth-set victory.
 
The final set was back-and-forth with eight tie scores and three lead changes. After trailing 13-12, a Klein kill knotted the score at 13. However, Elmira answered with back-to-back kills to capture the set 15-13, and the match 3-2.
 
NYU vs. D'Youville Highlights:
 
- Derrick Chiu tallied 21 assists and six digs.
 
- LaPorte filled the stat sheet with 17 kills, four service aces, three block assists, and three digs.
 
- Nick Capriccio hit .538 with eight kills, three digs and three block assists.
 
- Will Kozloski recorded seven kills with three digs.
 
- Arya Amirhekmat notched six kills and five digs.
 
- Ryan Sharp led all players with seven digs.
 
NYU vs. Elmira Highlights:
 
- Mortland had 56 assists on 64 sets to go along with eight digs and five kills.
 
- Klein led all players with 24 kills.
 
- LaPorte recorded a double-double with 13 kills and a match-high 17 digs.
 
- Capriccio hit .500 with nine kills and just one error.
 
- Quirk tallied 14 digs.
 
- NYU out-killed Elmira 64-59.
 
The Violets are set to wrap-up conference play when they travel to New Paltz, NY, to take on #1 ranked SUNY New Paltz on Thursday, March 13. First serve is set for 7:00pm.
