The New York University men's volleyball team (6-3, 2-1) kicked off the United Volleyball Conference Crossover #1 with a straight-set victory over Hilbert College (25-13, 25-20, 26-24) before falling to Medaille College (3-4, 2-1) in five sets (29-27, 21-25, 25-18, 18-25, 15-12) in Cambridge, MA.

NYU started the Hilbert (3-9,0-2) match off with a highly efficient first set, hitting .500 on 11 kills and just one error. The second set was more of the same as the squad kept the lead from start to finish. The final set was decided in extra points consisting of six tie scores and three lead changes.

"It is always nice to get a conference win," said NYU Head Coach Jose Pina. "We came out fast and were able to keep up a high level of play in the opening match"

It was a different story in the nightcap as the squads were locked in a back-and-forth battle. After losing a crucial opening set in extra points 29-27, the Violets bounced back nicely and took the second set 25-21. The teams then traded 25-18 set victories in the third and fourth before setting up a winner-take-all fifth game. The Mavericks took an early 2-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 15-12 victory.

"This was a hard-fought match between two even teams," said Pina. "We played very well at times, but they were more consistent than us in the final set."
