Box Score

The #15 New York University men's volleyball team (8-4) defeated NYU-Poly (1-8) in straigh sets by a score of 25-11, 25-13, 25-16 on Tuesday, February 25, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

This was the last-ever match between the two teams, as the universities officially merged in January of this year. Now, officially the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering, the Blue Jays athletics' program will cease to exist at the end of the academic year.

"It is a surreal feeling knowing that we were playing opponents that next year could be our teammates," said NYU Head Coach Jose Pina.

Since the schools first became affiliated in 2008, Poly has never been able to take a set from the Violets. NYU is 3-0 in head-to-head competition with all three matches ending in straight sets.

Tonight's match was no different, as the Violets led the entire way and dominated on both sides of the ball by hitting .607 and holding NYU-Poly to a .200 hitting percentage.

"Once we got past the significance of the contest, we realized that it was just another match," said Pina. "Our serving game was a bit inconsistent, but overall I thought we had a solid performance."

Highlights:

- David Lauer had a season-high 16 kills with just one error for a .789 hitting percentage. He also added two digs and four aces.

- Nick Capriccio had 13 kills on 17 swings with zero errors to go along with six service aces.

- Mathew Coghlan led the squad with five digs.

- Derrick Chiu had a match-high 40 assists.

- Jacob Getz hit .429 with eight kills.

NYU returns to action against Vassar College on Thursday, February 27, for its annual "Violet Nation Presents: Tear it Up!" match at Coles. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
