Box Score

The New York University women's soccer team's 2014 season came to an end on Saturday afternoon, November 15, in Rochester, NY, as the Violets were defeated by Amherst College 2-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.

The Lady Jeffs tallied first as Rachel Abernathy found the back of the net in the 30th minute. Her goal was assisted by Megan Kim.

NYU controlled play early on in the second half, but could not find a way to score on Amherst goalkeeper Holly Burwick. She finished the game with six saves, earning her ninth shutout of the season.

"I thought our girls played well," said NYU Head Coach Michele Canning. "It was not the outcome we wanted, but I am proud of the team, especially the seniors."

Amherst (12-5-0) took advantage of NYU's aggressive play in the second half as Alex Sotak scored to give the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) school a 2-0 lead. Sotak was one-on-one with Violets' keeper Cassie Steinberg and barely beat her with a shot that slid just inside the near post.

Steinberg finished the game with seven saves, including a point-blank stop early to keep the game scoreless. She also made a diving stop in the 63rd minute with Amherst clinging to a 1-0 lead.

NYU's eight seniors led the Violets to their first NCAA Tournament in over a decade. The Violets' stellar 2014 season included the program's first tournament berth since 2002.

The Violets finished their season with an overall record of 11-6-2.
