New York University's men's and women's fencing teams return to competition on Saturday, January 25, against a variety of opponents when they host the NYU Invitational at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
On the men's side, NYU will host #1 Columbia University, #4 University of Notre Dame, #6 Ohio State University, #7 St. John's University, Yale University, and Wayne State University. On the women's side, the Violets will host the #3 Fighting Irish, #5 Buckeyes, #6 Lions, #7 Northwestern University, the #10 Red Storm, as well as the Bulldogs and Warriors.
The men's fencers are coming off some recent success at the
Division I North American Circuit Event where three Violets – sophomores
Andrew Kelly and
Alec Martini, along with freshman
Quinten Burgunder – won the silver medal in sabre, losing in a close gold-medal match 45-39.
The men's squad has a 2-5 dual record with victories over Drew University and Vassar College. Women's fencing is 2-6 this season with wins over the Rangers and Brewers, as well.
Last year at the NYU Invitational, both the men's and women's teams earned impressive victories over Wayne State. The women added another win, beating Yale 15-12.
The action begins at 9:00 am on Saturday at Coles. Family and alumni day festivities will also take place throughout the day. Results and recaps will be available after the competition ends at gonyuathletics.com.
