The New York University women's volleyball team won its seventh and eighth straight matches, defeating the University of Massachusetts-Boston and SUNY New Paltz at the NYU Violet Classic on Saturday, September 21, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
In the first match, the Violets (11-1) dropped the first set to the Beacons (5-7) by a 25-13 score, but rebounded to take the next three 25-15, 25-22, 25-23.
The next match was more of the same as NYU dropped the first set 25-14 before capturing the second set 25-14. After a hard-fought 25-23 third-set loss, the Violets bounced back once again to take the fourth 25-19.
Following a tight start to the fifth, NYU managed to pull away and win the decisive set by a score of 15-10.
Allie Williams was named to the All-Classic Team, while
Emily Moore took home the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
NYU defeated RIT in straight sets in its first match of the Classic on Friday.
NYU vs. UMass Boston
- The Violets had three players finish with double-digit kills.
Nicole Frias led the way with 13.
Alexandria Mao had 12 and
Williams contributed 11.
- Williams led the team with a .381 hitting percentage, committing only three errors on her 21 attempts.
- Mao totaled a match-high 13 digs.

Moore recorded a match-high 32 assists.
"Emily's setting was certainly a contributing factor to the win, as was our strong serve-receive game which caused a lot of side-outs," said Head Coach
Jolie Ward. "Our chemistry is really starting to develop."
NYU vs. New Paltz:
- The match represented NYU's first five-set victory of the season.
- Mao was equally effective on both sides of the ball with a total of 14 digs and 14 kills in the match.
- Moore had 44 assists on an eye-popping 141 sets.
-Williams hit .308 with 11 kills.

MaTia Hughes notched a career-best 27 digs.
"This weekend tested our ability to play against top competition," said Ward. "We rose to the occasion as a team with a lot of support coming from our bench. Our starters motivated each other to compete for every point."
The Violets return to action on Wednesday, September 25, at home against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. First serve is set for 7:00pm.
