Men's Volleyball Splits on Day One at UVC Crossover #2

The ninth-ranked New York University men's volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of play at the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover #2, which is being hosted by SUNY New Paltz in Purchase, NY, on Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10.
 
The Violets (8-5, 6-3) swept D'Youville College (8-9, 2-6) 25-23, 27-25, 25-23 to start Saturday. However, #15 Elmira College (13-8, 5-3) knocked off NYU in four sets 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18 in the Violets' second match of the day.
 
NYU vs. D'Youville Highlights
 
- Nick Benson led all players with 16 kills and four service aces.
 
- George Koch notched a match- and career-high seven blocks in the middle. He added five kills on nine swings.
 
- Dylan Ramey recorded a match-best 10 digs on defense. Connor Mortland and Colin LaPorte had seven digs each, with Mortland adding 34 assists and LaPorte notching nine kills.
 
- Chris Krueger led D'Youville with 12 kills. Jay Senozetnik and Alex Johnson had seven digs each for the Spartans, with Senozetnik adding 26 assists.
 
NYU vs. Elmira Highlights
 
- Drew Steiner led all players with 13 kills to go along with six digs.
 
- Benson and Nick Capriccio tallied 11 kills apiece, with Benson adding eight digs and four service aces and Capriccio hitting .625.
 
- Mortland recorded 43 assists and eight digs.
 
- Erik Griffin led the Soaring Eagles with 12 kills. Ryan Gelenitis added 11 kills, while Ryan Nerney totaled nine kills and six blocks.
 
“Today's split is not the result that we wanted,” said Head Coach Jose Pina. “But, the guys on the court played hard and gave a strong effort.
 
“Our service reception was inconsistent today,” he added. “That put us in a predictable offense, which allowed Elmira to be very effective against us in their transition offense.”
 
The Violets conclude play at the UVC Crossover #2 on Sunday when they take on #8 Medaille College at 11:00 am.
