Men's Volleyball Falls to Stevenson University and UC-Santa Cruz

Violets Drop First Two on California Trip

The New York University men's volleyball team dropped its two matches on the first day of competition against Stevenson University and UC-Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, CA, on Friday, March 15.

The Violets (9-8) took the Stevenson Mustangs (13-7) to four sets, but ultimately fell 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, 27-25.

The UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs (8-5) swept the Violets in three sets 25-18, 25-18, 25-14. 

Stevenson Highlights

-Colin LaPorte led the Violets with 19 kills and eight digs.

-Keith Waddell added 17 kills, as well as nine digs. 

-Phil Bueno and Drew Steiner added six kills each. 

-Drew Steiner had a match-high 12 digs. 

-Nick Benson dished out 45 assists. 

UC-Santa Cruz Highlights

-Benson paced the Violets with eight kills.

-LaPorte added five kills and 10 digs.

-Waddell put away six kills and contibuted six digs. 

"Today's matches were extremely competitive," said Head Coach Jose Pina. "In the Stevenson match, both teams really went after each other, but we struggled with our serve receive at the end of the third and fourth games. Santa Cruz was a stronger offensive team than Stevenson and we were unable to overcome their efficient offense. We look forward to having a better showing tomorrow." 

NYU returns to the court on Saturday, March 16, for rematches against both Stevenson and UC-Santa Cruz.
