Men's Volleyball Drops Matches to Stevenson and UC-Santa Cruz

The #8 New York University men's volleyball team was swept by both #10 Stevenson University and #5 UC-Santa Cruz on Saturday, March 16, in Santa Cruz, CA.

The Violets (9-10) fell to the Mustangs (14-7) 25-19, 25-23, 25-20 in the morning. The Banana Slugs (9-5) then defeated NYU 25-16, 25-18, 25-16 at night. The Violets also played both teams on Friday, March 15, with Stevenson earning a four-set victory and UC-Santa Cruz notching a sweep.

Stevenson Highlights

-Colin LaPorte led the Violets' offense with 12 kills. He also had three service aces. 

-Nick Benson added nine kills and an ace.

-Keith Waddell put down eight kills.

-Ryan Sharp ran a balanced offense with 31 assists. 

-For the Mustangs, Austin Jacoby paced the offense with seven kills and a .261 hitting percentage. 

UC-Santa Cruz Highlights

-Waddell paced the Violets with 12 kills and 10 digs.

-LaPorte, Benson and Steiner added four kills each.

-Benson dished out a team-high 23 assists.

-Salvatore LaCavera was the principle offensive weapon for the Banana Slugs, with 17 kills on 29 swings.

"Our ball control improved today, but our hitting was somewhat inconsistent," said Head Coach Jose Pina. "When we got into rallies, Stevenson and UC-Santa Cruz came up with the big points." 

NYU will return to the court on Friday, March 22, for its United Volleyball Conference (UVC) finale at the Stevens Institute of Technology. First serve from Hoboken, NJ, is set for 7:00 pm.
