The New York University men's volleyball team split its two matches on the first day of competition at the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover #1 at Medaille College in Buffalo, NY, on Saturday, February 9.

The Violets (4-2, 2-1) swept Hilbert College 25-20. 25-19, 25-20, before falling to #5-ranked Nazareth College 25-20, 25-22, 25-23.

In the opening match, #7-ranked NYU was led by a strong all-around performance by Drew Steiner. The freshman totaled a match-high 15 kills, while adding six digs, three assists, one block, and one service ace.

"We played extremely well against an undermanned team in the first match," said NYU Head Coach Jose Pina."

In the second match, freshman Nick Benson had a team-high nine kills. He also recorded five digs, a service ace and a block.

Hilbert HIghlights:

- Keith Waddell also had a strong showing for NYU with 12 kills, seven digs, two aces, and an assist.

- Benson recorded a match-high 37 assists, while adding two aces, a dig and a block.

- Dylan Ramey had a match-high 13 digs and recorded two assists.

- Adam Weaver led the Hawks (2-6, 0-2) with 10 kills.

Nazareth Highlights:

- Connor Mortland had team highs of 34 assists and six digs.

- George Koch and Waddell each had seven kills, with Koch recording a .556 hitting percentage.

- Steiner contributed six kills, four assists and a block.

- Tim Zyburt led the Golden Flyers (6-0, 1-0) with 13 kills.

"We played well against a very strong Nazareth team," Pina said. "The guys hung tough and continue to show lots of potential as we move forward." 

NYU returns to the court on Sunday, February 10, for a meeting with Penn State Behrend. That match is set to tip-off at 9:00am.
