Men's Basketball Downed by Emory Threes

Yaffe went 9-16 from the field en route to a season-best 24 points.
Box Score

Emory University's hot three-point shooting sank the New York University men's basketball team in a 74-69 loss in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, February 3, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Eagles (14-5, 6-3) shot 51.7% from deep, going 15-29 from beyond the arc to tie the Coles record for three-point field goals made in a game. Despite Emory's ability to hit the three, the Violets (13-7, 3-6) stayed in it with a huge rebounding advantage (41-27) and by taking care of the ball (just eight turnovers).

Carl Yaffe had a big day for NYU, scoring a season-high 24 points and adding nine rebounds and two steals. Yaffe passed Violet Hall of Famer and Assistant Coach Cal Ramsey for eighth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,288 career points.

Highlights

- NYU held Emory scoreless for the first six minutes of the game, but the Eagles hit back-to-back threes to end the first half and take a 31-26 lead into the locker room.

- The Emory lead climbed as high as seven midway through the second period, but Yaffe and Devin Karch helped bring NYU to within one, 58-57, with 6:28 to play.

- The Eagles responded with a Jake Davis layup and an Alex Greven three to go back up six. Free throws from Karch and Yaffe twice pulled the Violets back to within a possession, but each time Davis had an answer on the other end.

- Ryan Tana had 16 points for NYU, going 4-5 from three-point range for the second straight game. Karch added 11 points to finish as the squad's third double-figure scorer.

- In addition to six assists, Kyle Stockmal had eight points to move to two away from 1,000. Max Wein corralled a career-best 15 rebounds, while Costis Gontikas doled out a career-high four assists.

- Greven led Emory with 24 points, going 7-10 from three, while Davis had 22 points and six boards. Michael Florin dished out 11 assists without a turnover.

“They made big shots down the stretch,” said Head Coach Joe Nesci of the Eagles. “Our guys played a solid game against a good team.”

The Violets are back in action on Friday, February 8, when they travel to Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, for another UAA contest. Game time is at 8:00 pm.
