The New York University men's basketball team fell 64-51 to visiting University of Chicago on Sunday, February 17, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (14-10, 4-9) struggled offensively, as they were held to just 18 field goals. For the first time in 119 games – a stretch dating back to the 2008-09 season – no NYU player reached double figures in scoring.
Highlights
-
Cory Stockmal,
Costis Gontikas and
Devin Karch hit three straight layups to put the Violets up 16-11 midway through the first half.
- That would turn out to be NYU's largest lead of the game, as the Maroons (11-13, 5-8) went on a 15-5 run over the next five minutes to go up five themselves.
- Chicago's lead was nine, 37-28, at halftime. The Violets rallied early in the first half, with
Evan Kupferberg hitting a layup and then feeding
Ryan Tana for a three to cut the deficit to just one with 12:15 left.
- However, the Maroons responded with nine straight points to pull away, and NYU got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
- Karch was the Violets' leading scorer with eight points. Tana and
Carl Yaffe had seven each, with Yaffe adding seven rebounds.
Kyle Stockmal netted six points, while
Cory Stockmal and
Patrick Burns scored five apiece.
- Charlie Hughes and John Steinberg paced Chicago with 12 points each. Alex Pyper added 10 points.
“We were a little flat in the first half,” said Assistant Coach
John Pelin. “We had a little more energy to start the second, but we just couldn't keep it going. We had our chances, but we didn't take advantage.”
NYU concludes the regular season on Saturday, February 23, when it hosts rival Brandeis University at Coles. Tip-off is at 3:00 pm. Prior to the game, the squad will honor its five graduating seniors.
