The New York University wrestling team won its second consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship by defeating both Case Western Reserve University and the host University of Chicago on Saturday, February 16, in Chicago, IL.
It was NYU's sixth UAA title in program history, with all six coming during the tenure of current Head Coach
Bruce Haberli (1999, 2000, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013), who won his 200th career match with NYU last month.
The grapplers had little trouble in their first match of the day against Case Western, winning 43-6. But Saturday's second dual was tougher, as NYU pulled out a 24-15 win over Chicago and clinched the program's second UAA Championship in as many years.
“We came into the day ranked #17 in the nation and it was important for us to validate that ranking,” said Senior Assistant Coach
Corey Luce. “We have continued to experience great success against UAA competition these past two years and are starting to really see a glimpse of this team's potential.”
NYU has now won 13-straight dual matches dating back to November 11 and owns a 15-1 overall record.
“The streak is a testament to a lot of hard work and tough wrestling, but we can definitely improve in certain places heading into the postseason,” added Luce. “Overall, we are very proud to be UAA Champs.”
Highlights:
-In the squad's first match against Case Western, NYU took eight of 10 bouts as
Gabe Gleason (157),
Chris Amro (174),
Patrick Sheehan (184), and
Sam Galassi (197) each earned the team six points by recording pins.
-In the deciding match against Chicago,
Brandon Jones (133) continued his impressive season by recording a major decision against his opponent. Jones won by a combined 41-13 score in his two bouts and improved his overall season record to a perfect 9-0.
-Galassi (197), who recorded a decision victory vs. Chicago and a pin vs. Case Western, was named the UAA's Most Outstanding Wrestler. A senior, Galassi now owns three individual UAA titles and finishes his UAA career by receiving the Association's highest honor.
-Last year's UAA Most Outstanding Wrestler,
David Rice (165), went 2-0 with a tech fall against Case Western and a major decision against Chicago.
-Sheehan also had an outstanding day, recording a fall and a major decision. He posted a 15-4 major decision over his opponent from Chicago, Sam Pennisi, who was a NCAA qualifier last season.
-Rice, Amro, Sheehan, Galassi, and Jones each captured their respective weight class' individual titles and made the 2013 All-UAA Team.
-For their efforts, Haberli, Luce, and assistants
Brian Benson,
Mike Torriero, David Obiesie, and Vinnie Russo were named UAA Coaching Staff of the Year for the second straight year.
"I'm proud of my wrestlers and happy to win another title for NYU," Haberli said. "We've worked hard this season and we've achieved one of our goals. Now, we have more work to do."
