Box Score
The New York University men's basketball team could not get off a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds and fell 56-55 at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA, on Sunday, February 10.
In a tight contest that featured 11 ties, the Violets (13-9, 3-8) got the ball back down one with 22 seconds left after the Tartans' (5-17, 2-9) Asad Meghani missed the front end of a one-and-one. NYU turned it over in the final seconds, however, and an attempt to foul Carnegie Mellon one last time came after time expired.
Highlights
- The score was tied 26-26 late in the first half before Meghani was twice fouled on three-point attempts. He converted a four-point play on the first and hit all three free throws on the second to send the Tartans into halftime up 35-28.
- Carnegie Mellon took its largest lead of the game, 41-32, with 15:43 left before NYU rallied.
Carl Yaffe started an 11-2 run with a three-pointer and capped it with an assist to
Costis Gontikas to pull the Violets even at 43-43.
- The Tartans repeatedly pulled ahead, but NYU always kept it close. With the Violets down 54-51,
Kyle Stockmal hit a driving layup with 1:14 to play to make it a one-point game.
- Again down three after a pair of Rashaun Riley free throws, Stockmal hit both ends of a one-and-one with 26.4 seconds left to make it 56-55. NYU then got the miss it needed from Meghani at the line, but turned it over before it could get off a potential go-ahead shot in the final seconds.
-
Devin Karch and Stockmal each had 15 points to lead the Violets. Yaffe added nine points, 10 rebounds and six assists, while Gontikas contributed career highs of eight points and five boards off the bench.
- Meghani paced Carnegie Mellon with 15 points. Matt Loebbaka recorded 10 points and three blocks, while Rob Mohen notched seven points and 10 rebounds.
“We had a really tough shooting game – our defense and rebounding kept us in the game,” said Head Coach
Joe Nesci. “We kept it close enough down the stretch to where we had a chance at the end, but we just weren't able to execute on our last possession. Otherwise it could have been an exciting win instead of a tough loss.”
NYU returns home for a Tear It Up! contest against 20th-ranked Washington University on Friday, February 15. Tip-off is at 8:00 pm.
