The New York University men's volleyball team evened its 2013 record at 1-1 win a four-set victory over Ramapo College on Saturday, January 26, in Mahwah, NJ.
After dopping the first set 26-24, the Violets rallied to take the next three by scores of 25-23, 25-16, 25-22.
"Ramapo came out with a lot of emotion in the first set and we didn't play very well," said Head Coach
Jose Pina. "After that, we settled down, composed ourselves and played much better."
Freshman
Drew Steiner had an impressive collegiate debut for NYU. He led the Violets with 12 kills and added three service aces.
Another pair of freshmen,
Nick Benson and
Colin LaPorte, were also big contributors to the win. Benson had 11 kills, four blocks, five service aces, and four digs, while LaPorte also totaled 11 kills to go along with three digs and two blocks.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Newcomers weren't the only ones who had a hand in the victory, as senior
George Koch contributed eight kills and had an impressive hitting percentage of .545.
- Junior
Connor Mortland recorded match highs of 47 assists and 12 digs.
- Another junior,
Dylan Ramey, also had 12 digs.
- The junior class was also well represented by
Nick Capriccio, who had a match-high six blocks.
- Ramapo (0-1) was led by Nick Hrehovcik's 12 kills.
"We have a very young team with a lot of promise," Pina added. "It was an important win for us, a chance for our newcomers and our returners who are playing more to compete and to contribute to victories on the court while we continue to search for our optimal combinations."
NYU heads uptown and returns to the court this Tuesday, January 29, to face NYC opponent Hunter College at 7:00pm.
