The New York University men's basketball team raced to an early lead, but could not hold the momentum in falling to Washington University 68-59 in a University Athletic Association (UAA) game on Friday, January 18, in St. Louis, MO.

The Violets (12-3, 2-2) ran out to a 15-4 lead over the first five-and-a-half minutes of the game. But, the Bears (12-3, 2-2) countered with an 18-5 run to take a 22-19 lead with 8:28 left in the opening stanza.

NYU then mounted a 10-2 streak, capped by Carl Yaffe's jumper with 3:15 left in the half. However, Washington, ranked #13 in the latest D3hoops.com poll, ended the period on a 10-2 run to take a 34-31 lead at the intermission.

After Max Wein's three-pointer tied the game to open the second half, the Bears scored the next 10 points and held the lead the rest of the way.

HIGHLIGHTS:

- The Violets pulled within three, 52-49, on another jumper by Yaffe with 8:40 remaining in the game. That was as close as the Violets would get as the Bears scored the next 14 points to take a game-high 17-point lead (66-49).

- Yaffe led NYU with team highs of 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.

- Wein was the Violets' other double-digit scorer with 11. He added six rebounds and three assists.

- Evan Kupferberg came off the bench to contribute nine points, including a perfect 4-4 from the floor.

- Alan Aboona and Ben Hoener each had 15 points for the Bears.

The Violets complete their midwest road trip with a game against the University of Chicago on Sunday. Tip-off in the Windy City is set for 12:00pm Central Standard Time.
