The New York University men's basketball team led for all but the first two minutes of the game to pick up its first University Athletic Association (UAA) win on Friday, January 11. The Violets defeated visiting Case Western Reserve University 75-58 at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
NYU (11-2, 1-1) shot 55.1% from the field, its second straight game over 55%, while holding the Spartans (8-5, 1-1) to just 58 points. Case came in to the game third in the UAA in scoring at 75.5 points per game, including 85.3 over its previous six games.
Carl Yaffe and
Devin Karch led the Violet effort, recording 17 points apiece.
Highlights
- NYU jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the early going, getting three-pointers from
Kyle Stockmal,
Max Wein and Yaffe.
- The Violets led 33-24 at halftime and continued building the advantage early in the second half. Yaffe started the second period with a three and put NYU up 40-25 with a pair of free throws.
- The Spartans got as close as nine with 12:24 to play, but the Violets responded with an 8-0 run to pull away.
- The NYU lead grew to 19 on a big two-handed slam from Karch and eventually climbed as high as 24 on a three from
Jed Borovik.
- Yaffe added six rebounds, four assists and two steals to his 17 points. Karch went 8-10 from the field to improve his UAA-leading field goal percentage to 70.3%.
- Stockmal contributed nine points and three steals, while Wein tallied eight points, four boards and four assists.
“We did a great job of guarding Case – they are a potent offensive team,” said Head Coach
Joe Nesci. “We executed a lot better today. Our flow on offense was better and we were more consistent on defense.”
NYU continues UAA play on Sunday, January 13, when it hosts Carnegie Mellon University. Tip-off is at noon.
