The fifth-ranked New York University men's volleyball team (20-7) was upset in four sets (26-28,25-16, 25-17, 26-24) at 15th-ranked Baruch College (18-14) on Tuesday, April 3, .
Although this loss does not affect seeding in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Championship Tournament, it does hinder NYU's chances of earning an at-large bid into the inaugural NCAA Division III Championship.
It now seems as though the squad is going to have to win the UVC Tournament in order to ensure a birth into the NCAA Championship. NYU is set to host the UVC Championship on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15.
The Violets seemed to be their own worst enemy on Tuesday night, recording 28 attack errors, 15 service errors and five reception errors compared to Baruch, who committed just 13 attack errors, 11 service errors and two reception errors.
Taylor Fauntleroy led the way for the Violets, recording 17 kills.
Pat Dodd wasn't far behind with 16 kills, followed by
Nick Capriccio and
Matthew MacDonald, who each posted 10.
NYU was without usual starters
Connor Mortland and
Jay Hayes for the majority of the match.
Karl Johnson picked up the slack for both, as he doled out 46 assists and recorded a match-high eight digs. He also led the team in total blocks with three and notched four kills on as many attacks.
The Violets' next match is Friday, April 6, as they travel to Princeton, NJ, to take on Division I foe Princeton University. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
