Men's Volleyball Hosts NYU-Poly on Family Day

Violets Look to Enter UVC Tournament on a Hot Streak

Jayes Hayes is one of the seniors that will be honored before the match.
The fifth-ranked New York University men's volleyball team takes on crosstown rival NYU-Poly (9-13) for its annual Family Day match, Saturday, March 31, in the Coles Sports Center. This is the final regular season home match for the Violets, meaning the team will be honoring its graduating seniors.

The Violets (19-6) are coming off back-to-back five-set victories over conference opponents Stevens Institute of Technology and SUNY New Paltz. NYU has clinched the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) regular-season title and earned the right to host the UVC Championship tournament. Although this is not a conference match, interschool bragging rights are on the line.

"It is an honor to host our sister school for the very first time," said head coach Jose Pina.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools. In fact, this is NYU-Poly's first year as a Division III volleyball program.  After starting the season 0-6, the Blue Jays have won nine of their last 16 matches, including their last three in a row in straight-set fashion.

The Blue Jay's success is in large part due to freshman middle blocker Stefan Legar who leads the nation in total blocks-per-set with 1.54.  For the Violets, sophomore setter Connor Mortland is the beneficiary of such an evenhanded attack as he ranks second in the nation in assists-per-set with 10.69.

NYU is currently 6-0 at home and looks to wrap-up its first undefeated home regular season since 2002.  First serve is set for 2:00pm.
