Men's Fencing Goes 2-0 In Front Of A Home Crowd

The New York University men's fencing team routed Drew University and then edged  Stevens Institute of Technology in the home opener of the 2012-13 season on Thursday, November 29, at the Jerome Coles Sports Center.
 
The Violets had little trouble winning all three weapons, defeating Drew 20-7 and then squeaking out a close one against Stevens 15-12.
 
Highlights vs Drew:
 
- In foil, the men started the match strong, winning 6-3. Phil Jamesson led the way with a 3-0 performance, while David Popkin went 2-1 and Andrew Ark went 1-2.
 
- In sabre, the Violets were equally impressive, beating Drew 7-2. Stephan Teng tallied a perfect 3-0 record and Andrew Kelly was not too far behind going 2-0. Fernando Maymi went 1-1, while Jerry Xu went 1-0 and Carson Grubb finished 0-1.
 
- The men finished off Drew 7-2 in epee on the shoulders of Ricky Woodward, who went 2-0, and David Gustafson, who finished 2-1. Enrique Cavazos went 1-1, while Evan Accardi and Mir Ali both won their lone bouts.
 
Highlights vs Stevens:
 
- Despite Jamesson going 2-1 in foil, Stevens jumped out to an early lead by capturing the weapon 6-3.
 
- Cavazos was the hero for the men in epee, going 2-1. He posted a decisive victory in the second-to-last bout which gave the Violets a 5-4 win.
 
- Still trailing in the match, the Violets finished strong with a 7-2 win in sabre as Kelly powered the squad with his 3-0 performance and clinched the team victory over Stevens.

"We have a young team overall, and several of our fencers showed real strength coming off the bench," said NYU Head Coach Steve Mormando. "Overall, for our first dual meets, I'm pleased with the performance and see things getting better as the season progresses."
 
The Violets return back to action on Saturday, December 1 at the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, NY.
