Women's Soccer Tops Rochester in Double OT

Menta's Second Goal Lifts Violets to Big Win

Menta has recorded 28 points in just 11 games, already the third-most points in a season in school history.
Box Score

Melissa Menta's goal with just 1:38 left in the second overtime lifted the New York University women's soccer team to a 3-2 University Athletic Association (UAA) victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday, October 6, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

Menta's game winner came in the 109th minute after the Yellowjackets (3-8, 0-2) twice fought back to tie the score. Sophia Barnhart played a short pass to Madeline Clappin on the left wing, and Clappin's cross found Menta all alone in the box. She finished the play to give the Violets (8-3, 1-1) their first UAA win of 2012.

Highlights

- Menta also gave NYU the early lead in the 15th minute. Serra Tumay played a free kick forward, and Menta chased it down and lofted it over the charging goalkeeper. Tumay's assist was the 19th of her career, bringing her into a three-way tie for the school record in the category.

- Rochester tied the score 1:21 before halftime, when Hayley Engel received Morgan O'Brien's long through ball and placed it inside the far left post. The Violets needed just 15 seconds to regain the lead, however, on a goal nearly identical to their first. Mary Clair played a long ball ahead that Claire Shanahan beat the defense to and touched over the charging keeper.

- The Yellowjackets again knotted things up in the 60th minute. Ashley Hunt put in a low shot after gaining control of the ball as it bounced around the edge of the 18.

- NYU had a great chance to take back the lead in the 73rd minute, when Cami Crawford played a ball to Ashley-Simone McKenzie in the box. However, Rochester goalkeeper Bridget Lang made a tremendous save to keep things even.

- In a game in which the Violets outshot the Yellowjackets 21-11 and forced Lang to make eight saves in goal, Menta finally ended it just before time expired.

“It feels great to get our first conference win at home,” said Head Coach Michele Canning. “The team worked really hard and found a way to step up the level and finish when it mattered most.”

NYU returns to the pitch on Monday, October 8, for a home non-conference game against St. Joseph's College-Long Island. Kickoff is at 4:00 pm at Gaelic Park.
